House is closer to Kierkegaard and Socrates than to Holmes etc. The latter connection is just for the pyrotechnics and the superficie: sleight of hand and spectacular detection. But the former supply the meat and the grist.
With House, every enunciation is at once expression, performance and action; every action is at once motivated, subject to principles, produced by and productive (and expressive) of character, and liable to lead to various consequences. Deciding, willing acting is a constant interplay of forces and objects. No respite is allowed. Even when success is granted (in the only place it can appear—in outcomes), there is no relief. To take relief would be to take shelter from one’s continuing responsibility. To be happy (i.e. complacent) with oneself is an initiation into, an addition to, a temptation to, a sign of ethical decline into mere morals.
