As Hurricane Gustav approaches the Gulf Coast, we’re reminded of Republican government in action:
On the eve of Hurricane Gustav’s expected arrival, many in New Orleans, from residents of the Ninth Ward to the city’s mayor to the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, have their doubts about whether the levees will hold.
“There is a real likelihood of getting some overtopping. Additionally, rain is a big factor here,” said DHS chief Michael Chertoff about water pouring over the tops of the levees.
Three years since Katrina and $3 billion later, the levees still leak and much of the repair work remains incomplete.
“Huge areas of Louisiana are going to be devastated. We’re going in essence to see what Katrina didn’t destroy, what Rita didn’t destroy in 2005 being destroyed now in 2008,” said Ivor Van Heerden, a professor at Louisiana State University who wrote a book about why the levees broke during [...]
So, the RNC begins tomorrow. I am, as tg puts it, “wildly indifferent” about party lines. I love and hate things about both sides. But one thing I also hate is other people’s urine.
Here’s the link to the story on the protesters who hoarded “buckets of urine” to pour on…people I guess?
I have a question for these folks: How does one collect that much pee? Do you stage a pee drive? Do you just, yourself, pee into a bucket for weeks on end? Did you drink extra water to collect said pee? Did some of the earlier pee evaporate, creating frustrations in your pee collecting efforts? Or, did you have a lid on the pee?
My final thought on this head scratcher is this, I never want to have someone else’s pee poured on me. Ever.

Are PWDs a Burden to Their Families?
Early this month the country witnessed an interesting debate sparked off by a couple in Mumbai who wanted to abort their 6 month old fetus, after doctors reported that the child would be born with a congenital heart condition that would require medical care throughout the child’s life. The parents coming from a middle class family believed they would not be able to afford the constant costs of medical treatment and therefore wanted to terminate the pregnancy.
A prominent news channel then conducted a countrywide online poll to find out how many people though that People with Disabilities (PWDs) are a burden to their families. The ethics of terminating a 6 month pregnancy not withstanding, an astounding 91% of those polled, felt that indeed PWDs were a burden to their families and so obviously, couples should have special rights to abort a fetus with potential [...]

This Labor Day weekend we have been doing anything but not laboring! We have been busy ripping up carpet, repainting walls, putting up the new bed, curtains, installing new floors etc. But alas we think we are finished. We got a Select Comfort mattress. The first night was a little different! David slept awesome, and I woke up with a sore back. I had my side set pretty firmly so tonight I will set mine to David’s settting! I need some sleep! While re-doing the room we haven’t slept the best! One night David slept in the guest bedroom upstairs and I slept on the top bunk in Mekhi’s room!
Hope everyone has been having a great L O N G weekend!!!

Next week is looking awfully busy and my shoulder has been quite troublesome, so I went to the walk-in clinic today. I almost didn’t go. I hate visions of it being nighmarishly busy and I was feeling a little stressed out and the thought of a busy waiting room with crying kids and sick people wasn’t a pleasant thought. I sucked it in though and went. The beauty of this visit was the waiting room was pretty much devoid of people. Yay!
That’s where the pleasantness ends.
I hate doctors!
The first problem was me trying to explain to the doctor what the problem was. I hadn’t really thought too much about how my shoulder hurts… just that it hurts. Worse at night and in the mornings, enough so that it is hard to sleep. Moving it causes pain, and if I raise it so my elbow is up and to the side, [...]

I read a very small article this past weekend, burried in the back of the paper that Michigan DNR are stumped as to why 19 deer have turned up dead alongside the Clinton River.
Hmmm, do you think I need to stop drinking the water? I can not beleive this is a small story. Normal diseases that deer can die of have been ruled out. It looks like something bacterial. Um, hello? What is in my water?
Coincidentally, it was reported in the same week that two local schools have high levels of copper and lead, and the kids returning to school Tuesday can’t drink the water, and it hasn’t been decided yet that they can even wash their hands with it.
I wonder if we are being poisoned? You know, come to think of it, a lot of my health troubles started or began once I moved here 4 1/2 years ago.

In wheat, barley, rye, and low level oats, there is a rubbery like protein called gluten. This substance is what helps the dough bind, which you would see with baked breads and other baked foods. Although these grains contain gluten, which can cause a gluten allergy in sensitive people, they also contain a number of other proteins that can also cause allergy symptoms. The four primary proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley includes albumin, globulin, gliadin, and glutenin, better known as gluten. While the symptoms and severity of the symptoms of gluten allergy vary from one person to another, generally a person would experience hives, swelling, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, or asthma. If the person is highly sensitive to gluten allergy, the symptoms could be life-threatening.
The good news about gluten allergy is that if the person has a reaction after eating wheat or wheat product, making an early diagnosis [...]

Last year I must have made a list of 70 some dishes for ideas because I knew I would get bored of cooking daily something new and appetizing for the family especially when they were fasting. However, even with such a list, I would look down it and say oh, no not today, oh no not in the mood or I don’t have the ingredients, or hmm too heavy or too salty.
So what is there that is good to eat in Ramadan? Well, I will share with you some of our family favorites and some of the mistakes we have found out. I will start out with those first! Things that are high in salt like snacking on chips or nuts or crackers are things to stay away from. Foods which contain MSG or monosodium glutemate, also listed as food enhancers, or those of you who eat out at Chinese, [...]
